Why the change from members or associates?
The changing nature of participation as our reach grew meant we had to make the difficult decision to move away from our previous membership model, which was no longer practical to deliver. We based our ‘Friends’ scheme on what we felt we could confidently and consistently deliver to our supporters, whatever challenges 2022 might present. We also wanted to open it up to all people who wanted to support us, whether they be artists, makers, art lovers, or people who simply believe in what we do.
By no means did we wish to diminish the creative membership community that has developed over the years. However, we felt that we were unable still to offer certain benefits of the former membership, as our post-pandemic organisation has had to adapt and change.
With no Members’ Open programmed in 2022, no automatic submission of cards and prints, and limited options to hold large social events, we knew our offering had to change – hence the Friends scheme.
We hope we can build a broad network of Friends who are interested in the work we do and have a passion for the visual arts, helping us to continue to create opportunities for artists and makers, to realise our ambitious programme of exhibitions and events, and to ensure our stability and accessibility continues long into the future to benefit our local community.
