Line and Tone, 4th-16th October 2021

Drawings and paintings from Russell Coulson in the shop gallery. Open daily 10.30-4.30.

Russell has had a career in advertising, graphic design and illustration having been an art director, creative director, for leading advertising agencies in London and Australia. He also had his own design studio working with Disney, Warner Bros and other leading licence houses in Europe.

Russell produced gift packaging and original merchandise for the main high street stores, as well as illustrating for children’s books, national newspapers and periodicals, creating original characters for the internet and play activities. He has drawn and painted all his life for his own amusement and now in retirement is creating most days.

The spontaneity of his landscapes and the use of mixed media enable him to retain the emotion and idea of a moment and quickly move on to the next concept, so his paintings are never overworked and stagnant. His seascapes are naive and instant representations of the coastline. They are graphic, stylised and colourful, creating vibrant patchworks of tone and movement.

Russell has always been fascinated by line artwork in figurative and portrait drawing. Experimenting with line and medium, taking it to its ultimate potential without causing the drawing to collapse or turn cartoon. He still tries to retain the characteristics and recognisability of the subject.
